WHEN LANDSCAPE BECOMES A MEMORY

On the occasion of the exhibition, the SPAZIO 22 top-floor showroom will be transformed into an ethereal environment in which a site-specific installation made of extremely light white threads draws the space vertically. The exhibition itinerary has been conceived as a mental landscape that envelops the visitor and includes a number of never before exhibited works by Hernan Pitto Bellocchio and Matilde Solbiati, who have been invited to forge a creative dialogue together. And more specifically it is the idea of memory in all of its many facets that forms the central pivot around which their artistic research moves.

Hernan Pitto Bellocchio has created the installation as well as a set of pencil and ink drawings on Japanese paper that display reflections around the elemental geometric figure of the triangle – a symbolic and abstract transposition of the mountain – which is increasingly multiplied into lusher systems such as the vegetation of a forest from which archetypical shapes emerge, each with its different implications. The project has taken shape from an image impressed in the Chilean architect and artist’s memory, that of the Andean Mountains, which with their soaring profiles dominate the horizon and morphology of Santiago de Chile, the artist’s hometown. Following his move to Milan in 2013, the absence of the mountain range has only intensified these memories that have solidified, becoming increasingly alive and present in the artist’s quest. An inexorable attraction that has led him to portray the mountains almost obsessively, or to reconstruct them in open spaces, thus keeping them always fresh in his mind: “These forms have shaped my childhood; it is impossible not to keep them before my mind’s eye”, says the artist. Walking along the steep slopes of the mountains soaring up to the sky, a new poetical dimension emerges, an empyrean where thinking becomes purer and lighter as the white threads of memory do.
